IITs: Beyond JEE and BTech Programs

The three letters I.I.T. can mean different things to different people. If you are a student or a parent of a 9th grade student or above aspiring to get into an IIT, then you can look forward to a dreadful work schedule in the next few years with your days starting at unearthly hours. If you have gone through an IIT, you would be proud of your achievement. For most others, it is a lottery, as despite having 25 odd IITs in the country, the first year engineering admission count still stands in the order of several thousands, while about 50 times more people take the entrance exam JEE. The IIT stamp has become a trademark in the last 50 years, thanks to their rigorous curriculum and internationally experienced faculty. Several IITians are in great positions all over the world!

Beyond Core Engineering programs Very few seem to know that IITs have a lot more than undergraduate engineering degrees. They have several arts and science programs, master’s and PhD programs, internships and outreach programs that a student in a school or a college should watch out for. All IITs have PhD and two year MSc programs in basic sciences including mathematics, physics and chemistry. IIT Bombay has an interesting master’s degree in Applied Statistics and Informatics (ASI) which is a sought out program in the current data science era. IIT Kharagpur has a school of medical science and technology which has several interesting Master’s programs targeting MBBS degree holders. They even have a plan of starting a MBBS program. IIT Kanpur has recently launched four eMaster’s program for industry professionals.

For the first time anybody of any age and any background (as long as they have passed 12th stanrdard) can register for this program.
IIT/JEE is not required for this program.

Conversation with an Engineering graduate turned Linguist!

Millions of engineering students, or in any other field, pursue their programs, whether they are passionate about that or not. That shows up in placements, after their graduation. But if you happen to find your passion, sky is the limit.

Meet Ms. Swathiga, an engineering student with a chance encounter with a language app, that helped her find her passion and took her to a new career, that she hadn’t planned on, before.

Swathiga joined Instrumentation Engineering in a college near Chennai, affiliated to Anna University. She went through the first group (Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry) in 12th standard, followed by engineering counseling and joined her BE in Instrumentation.

What follows is an excerpt of her interview with ACG (All Career Guru) team.

ACG: When you joined Instrumentation engineering, at that point, did you know what instrumentation engineering was, or whether that is what you wanted to do.

S: No, I did not. I joined because the college I was going to was a decent one, and this program is where I got placed.

ACG: How did you cope with early semester exams?

S: Right from semester 2, I realized that engineering was not my cup of tea, but couldn't give up, and didn’t want to waste parents' money; and I was exploring other things, at my leisure...

Ms. Swathiga
"I came across a language learning app, Duolingo, which I hooked on to, and I realized my passion then, for languages."
"While on the job, I enrolled in Goethe Institute, officially recognized institute, which conducts exams and provides certifications for language proficiency"
Duolingo (duolingo.com) is one of the most popular app / website for learning languages.

AI for Programming Education

Many of you have seen autocorrect tools that correct your spelling and even grammar in word processing documents.

Won't it be nice if there is such a tool to correct syntax and logic of programs?

What if there is a tool that generates a program based on some input output specification in natural language ?

It is understood that programming is an essential 21st century life skill similar to reading, writing and arithmetic. Many first time programmers get frustrated to get their first program compile and run correctly and provide the desired output.
Of course, those who get past the frustration, feel empowered, as they understand the power of programming to create interesting outputs and solve problems.

PUZZLE CORNER

There are 100 soldiers standing in a line wearing a red or blue cap.

Each one can see the color of the caps of all those standing before them, but nothing else.

A commander starts from the end of the line, asking the color of the cap of each person. The goal is to get a maximum number of right answers. Recall that they can only see the color of the caps of those in front of them, and can hear the answer to the questions of the commander.

All the soldiers together can plan a strategy beforehand. They have no control on what color cap they will get, and they can not see the color of their own caps

a) Design a strategy so that at least 50 of them will get the right answer.

b) Design a strategy so that at least 99 of them get the right answer.

A random lucky draw will be used to offer exciting goodies for correct answers before Jan 15, 2022
